CYC Celebrates in Style

CYC may be known for our transformative programs, our commitment to community, and our longevity in Chicago, but we’ve also thrown some of the best events around. The impacts of the health crisis caused us to pause our annual events for over two years, and while we were committed to keeping our staff, friends, and supporters safe, we missed the opportunity to celebrate and raise crucial funds for our early learning, afterschool, summer, and family engagement initiatives.

Thankfully, 2022 was a shining year for CYC, as we hosted not one, but three amazing events:

After throwing a fantastic party at Wintrust’s Grand Banking Hall for Shake and Stir in February, CYC doubled down on our efforts and planned an event weekend for the books.

That’s right, Believe in Kids and Over the Edge took place in one action-packed weekend, raising more than $700,000 for our programs.

The theme of the Believe in Kids gala that resonated with everyone in attendance was the appreciation for CYC staff. Through awards, shout-outs, and a heartfelt video, the CYC team was recognized for its commitment to the youth and families of Chicago, particularly during a challenging few years. You can celebrate our staff with a donation or by watching the video here:

MC’d by CYC’s own Center Director Clarence Hogan, the BIK Dinner brought our communities together at the stunning RPM on the Water. The night included presentations from the Event Weekend Sponsor GTCR, a delicious dinner, a silent auction, a paddle raise, a keynote speech from CYC alumni Hope Massallo, and the presentation of the Epstein Scholarship.

Just a day later, CYC quickly pivoted to thrills with Over The Edge. For the second year in a row, brave rappellers took their passion for our programs to incredible heights, rappelling 17 stories down the 20 W Kinzie Building. Alongside sponsors, Board members, staff, and supporters, CYC alumni George Curtis and ABC7 reporter Maher Kawash took a leap of faith for our kids and families.

Perhaps one of the most memorable moments of the day, however, was when 82-year-old Joyce Wisniewski went OTE for CYC! Joyce and her husband, Hank, have been involved with the organization for decades, with Hank serving on CYC’s Executive Board and Head of the Facilities Committee.

After two years that could be defined by what has been lost, CYC is proud to celebrate our wins. The return of our events marks a new era for CYC, and we are proudly looking ahead to what comes next. There is one constant that remains in the work we do: our people make EVERYTHING possible.

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, and enjoyed our events. We were so happy to celebrate with you. Cheers!
