Celebrating Black History at Every Age

At CYC, we celebrate, honor, and study Black history year-round. With the majority of staff, students, and communities being people of color, Black history is extremely important to our learning. This year, we engaged everyone from our early learning youth to our parents and caregivers in Black History month activities.

Our young learners at Little Kiddies celebrated Black History Month and Black Heritage Week by highlighting and showcasing African culture through attire and customs. Children, staff, and parents alike donned their best cultural garb and discussed important Black figures in national and international history such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Barack Obama, Rosa Parks, and Nelson Mandela (just to name a few!).

Students and staff wore headscarves while listening and dancing to African music, and wrapped up the celebrations with African food. Ms. Doris, the Director at Little Kiddies, reported that the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the food and trying new things!

Teens at Sherman School of Excellence, one of CYC’s school-based partnerships, honored the past, present, and future through a dance performance influenced by and celebrating Black History Month.

CYC also partners with Perspectives High School of Technology to deliver quality afterschool programming. In honor of Black History Month and building stronger connections with our families, we met with parents across the Perspectives network through a Parent Sip and Paint Night. CYC’s school partnership initiative, 21st AVE (Academic Vibes and Enrichment) operates out of the Perspectives Leadership Campus, and the principal of the campus attended the event as well! Parents and caregivers came together to relax, connect, and paint striking images celebrating Black history. We were so happy to engage our families and spend time in person!
