We at Camp would like to thank each and every person involved with making this camping season happen; from the Board Members and Donors who help keep camp open, to the CYC Staff who work so hard to recruit our campers and keep our cabins full, and our wonderful Seasonal Staff Members who keep camp safe, fun and exciting every day!

While Exit 30 is on hiatus throughout the summer, we want to keep you up-to-date with all of the excitement at camp, so we have attached a PDF of our Camp Newsletter, the “Camp Rosenthal Times,” for your viewing and reading pleasure.

A Camp Success Story

By Steven Greer

The summer camp season was in full swing at CYC - Camp Rosenthal, where the first session has already passed, filled with energy, excitement, and adventure. As the youth of Chicago’s inner-city stepped off the bus into the wilderness, there was enthusiasm in their eyes. I had the pleasure and opportunity of being the director of Apache Village, which houses boys from ages 11 to 14.

As I began with icebreakers on the first day, I took note of the boys who would soon become junior counselors. There was an array of young men who were excited, jittery, and chatty. The boys were eager to meet one another, find out what programs they would be involved in, and in which cabin they would be living. As I assigned cabins, there were smiles and inquisitive looks as the boys began to meet their new roommates.

Once I had assigned the last young man to his cabin, I found a boy tugging at my shirt. This particular young man had not caught my eye during the icebreakers, so I asked him his name and how I could help him. The boy’s name was D, and he was a lanky boy with a look of trepidation in his eyes.

Facilities

The camp is divided into four villages, each of which consists of cabins, a bathhouse and an activity building. Campers are grouped in villages by age and gender and sleep eight to a cabin along with two counselors who maintain a consistent, caring, and attentive presence throughout the day and night. The Camp dining hall is large enough for all campers to eat together family style. The food is delicious and plentiful—no one leaves a meal hungry!

Activities

Activities include swimming, paddle boating, canoeing, fishing, arts & crafts, hiking, environmental education, bicycling, dance, group games, talent shows, plays & skits, singing and music, campfire storytelling, cook-outs, environmental education, archery, ropes courses, and creative writing! Campers make life-long friends, learn self-reliance, and learn more about the natural world and their place in it in a safe, beautiful environment.
